Lesson Practice
This first lesson begins the workbook's systematic approach to undoing the way you see the world. Look around the room you're in right now — your desk, chair, hands, the window. The lesson asks you to apply the idea to each thing you notice: "This desk does not mean anything. This chair does not mean anything."
This isn't nihilism — it's freedom. The Course is pointing out that every meaning you see in physical objects has been assigned by you. The desk "means" work, stress, productivity — but those meanings came from your mind, not from the desk itself.
Practice this slowly, without rushing. Let your eyes rest on each object for a moment before applying the idea. Don't try to force yourself to believe it — just practice saying it and notice what happens in your mind.
Key Insight
The world you see is a projection of the meanings your mind has assigned. By recognizing that these meanings are not inherent in objects, you begin to open space for a different kind of seeing — one the Course calls vision.
Practice Notes
- Apply the idea to whatever your eyes rest on, moving slowly around the room
- Don't try to apply the idea to everything — just what naturally catches your attention
- Practice for no more than twice today, about a minute each time
- Don't exclude anything from the idea, but don't strain to include everything either
Reflection
Take a moment to sit quietly with today's idea. There is no rush. Let the words settle into your awareness without forcing them to mean anything specific. Trust that understanding will deepen naturally through practice.
From Walking the Workbook
Beloved, the Workbook begins. We are here together.
The first lesson sounds extreme — and is meant to. The Course is not asking us to believe the room is meaningless. It is asking us to notice that the meanings we have given the objects in front of us are our own assignments, not properties of the things themselves.
Read the lesson in the Workbook. Follow its gentle instruction. Look at specific objects. Apply the idea. Continue for about a minute.
This is the practical entry point for the entire year. For 365 days, the Workbook will be gently loosening the mind's certainty that what it sees is what is real. The loosening is the practice. We do not need to believe today. We only need to apply.
For today. Do the exercise as the Workbook describes. Once or twice. Apply, notice, set down.
We have done our first day. Three hundred and sixty-four to go.
